Ingredients
  

  • 6 lbs apples peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 cup apple cider or water
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar adjust to taste
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground cloves
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract optional

Method
 

  1. Place apple slices and apple cider in a crock pot.
  2. Cover and cook on low for 10–12 hours, stirring occasionally.
  3. Once apples are soft and darkened, mash or blend until smooth.
  4. Stir in sugar, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, salt, and vanilla.
  5. Continue cooking on low for 1–2 more hours, uncovered, stirring frequently to thicken.
  6. Ladle hot apple butter into sterilized jars and process in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes for canning.
  7. Let jars cool completely, check seals, and store in a cool, dark place.

Notes

  • Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for best flavor.
  • Adjust sugar to taste after cooking if needed.
  • Stir often at the end to prevent sticking.
